Fly fishing reels do more than store line.  Fly reels range from the simple to the elaborate.  Simple fly reels may only have a clicker which does have a limited drag function.  Don't you love a fish pulling on the line to make the drag sing… Other fly reels have an exposed rim which allows you to "palm" the rotating spool and hopefully stop the run of the fish you just hooked.  Watch out for the reel handle as it can be a "knuckle buster." 

Other more expensive and elaborate reels may also have the rim palming function and may have drag systems that could stop a 747 if they were upsized.  Of course these systems have all kinds of sophisticated bearing systems and all kinds of drag inducing materials.  More sophistication means that the drag systems have to be protected from dirt, sand, salt, and water.  More protection means more expense.
